Ancient drama has its roots in the worship of Dionysus and its various forms evolved and reached their peak in Athens. As the outstanding poetic expression of the 5th century B.C., it harmoniously combined melos (song) and epos (epic poetry), in which the myth is no longer simply narrated, but is rather conveyed through dialogue and action, first in throchaic tetrameter, later in iambic trimeter.
