The remarks made in the Preface to Volume IV of this series are also valid for the present volume, which in many ways forms a continuation of Vol. IV. It was hoped that the publication of Vol. V, dealing with small female figurines of the Cypro-Archaic period and written by Jacqueline Karageorghis, would follow that of Vol. IV. However, small female figurines, both moulded and handmade, form a large proportion of the Cypro-Archaic small clay figurines; in fact they far outnumber the male figurines, and also show more variety with regard both to type and technique. The large quantity of material involved , together with other factors beyond our control, have delayed the preparation of Vol. V, and Vol. VI has therefore been printed first. 
As in Vol IV, the material has been classified thematically. However, the numbers of known examples of the various types differ greatly. Figurines of horse, bulls, goats, dogs and birds are far more numerous than those of types such as sirens, fish, hares and hedgehogs. To facilitate use of the volume, we have kept strictly to the thematic classification irrespective of numbers.
