Past prejudices about the character of Aegean culture and cultural interconnections in the Mediterranean have now been almost completely eradicated, and recent scholarship has accentuated interrelationships in an area which played such an important role in the formation of Mediterranean civilization. The crucial period from c.1600-c.600 B.C. is one of the most formative in the history of the ancient Mediterranean. It includes the years of the apogee of Mycenaean civilization, the expansion of the Aegeans to the Eastern Mediterranean, the “obscure” period of the “Dark Ages”, the emergence of the Phoenicians and their westward expansion, the appearance of the Greek alphabet and the creation of the Orientalizing style in Greek art amongst other topics.
