Better than any other collection, the Mycenaean Hall of the National Archaeological Museum affords the possibility for the study and enjoyment of works of art of the Mycenaean world. In almost all the museums of Greece and in some of the museums abroad, the observant visitor may discover a Mycenaean object displayed with special care because of its very singularity. In the Museums of Nauplia, Chora and Volos, Mycenaean collections are perhaps more prolific, though not comparable to that in the National Arcaeological Museum of Athens. Moreover, in these museums Mycenaean exhibits remain isolated, as they are not presented along with other objects of the same or similar civilization, coming from the same or nearby locality, and dating to the same or roughly contemporary period. By contrast, the Mycenaean Collection of the National Arcaeological Museum gains further significance from the fact that it is accompanied by finds of an earlier date contained in the neighbouring Neolithic Room and by the unique works of Cycladic art displayed in the Cycladic Room. It thus becomes a source of knowledge for those interested in the earliest Greeks and a source of delight for those acquainted with the prehistoric Aegean.
