The embroidery and jewellery complementing traditional Greek costume can be considered to constitute a separate and distinct cycle within the general sphere of “popular” artistic creativity, as they reflect the same need of the human spirit to achieve distinction and personal expression. The pragmatic need to protect one’s self from the cold -the basic factor underlying human dress- or the need to invest in treasured possessions -as is the case with jewellery and ornamentation- increases with the passage of time, until the point when man becomes increasingly sensitive to the effects of changes in the weather and succumbs to material property. In spite of their practical use, however, both costume and jewellery are not far removed from their psychological origins.
