The Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute as part of its publishing activities has decided to publish this profound study of Dr Elladios Chandriotis, one of its most active members. His analysis of three tragedies Aeschylus’ Choephoroe, Sophocles’ Electra and Euripides’ Electra would be, I believe, a valuable tool in the hands of both the philologist and the director. In any production of ancient Greek tragedy the combined effort of the theoretician and the practitioner is bound to produce the best possible result. The lack of dramaturge in the Cyprus theatres is bound to lead, in some cases at least, to wrong interpretation approaches which result in misconceptions that lessen the dramatic impact on modern audiences. The deconstruction method Dr Chandriotis has followed in this extended essay, though may sound paradoxical, leads to a better and more profound insight in the structure of the above mentioned tragedies.
