“Mystery” in ancient Greece referred to the unrevealed truths of religion and its ritual ceremony. For this reason sacrifices and rituals took place at night in the temples while participation was prohibited to the uninitiated. During antiquity, “mystery” also meant “orgia” (orgies) or sacrificial rituals and later the worship of Dionysos became known as “orgia” or orgiastic. “Ceremony” was the purely religious festivity, especially that containing the purification libation or religious rite. Later, during Plato’s time, such ceremonies were practiced to expel misfortune.
