In 1935 Cyprus acquired a Department of Antiquities vested with powers for the protection of the remains of the island’s past and endowed with the means for their scholarly study. Twenty-five years ago Cyprus regained the independence it had lost around three thousand years ago. Now in 1985 Cyprus, the Antiquities Department and all their friends join in commemorating two landmarks in the island’s modern history, the fiftieth anniversary of the effective nationalisation of Cypriote antiquity and the twenty-fifth anniversary of the restoration of national sovereignty. It is a testimonial to the timelessness and tenacity of geographical and historical imperatives, and to the resilience of the indigenous spirit, that Cyprus’ transition to its unaccustomed status as custodian of its own heritage and destiny should have been both tormented and yet productive, and these seemingly contradictory strands are reflected in archaeological activity in the period from 1960 to 1985.
